RWL Newsletter

Join writer and speech-language pathologist, Hailey Phipps, as she talks about all things reading, writing, and literacy.

In last month's newsletter I mentioned the small, literacy focused book club I'd be leading for kids ages 6-8 in my area. Well, it starts this week!

The club was designed for reluctant and struggling early readers, and is focused on making reading FUN. We will be addressing major pre-reading and reading skills week to week, but this is all about embedding those skills in play-based activities. We will be building confidence and comfort around books, practicing narrative language skills, and enjoying a fun read aloud together. It will run for 6 weeks, and we'll finish a chapter book by the last session.

My local community was given 3 choices and voted on which book we would be reading. Now it's time for the reveal! If you saw the subject line of this email, then you've probably already guessed it...

We're reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary! Our voters were feeling a classic this fall, and I am so excited to be reading this as the first book club book. I'm also excited to share my plans with you so you can start your very own book club at your school or in your community.

Once Book Club is over, I'll be updating the plans based on what worked and what didn't. Want more details on the book extension activities? Follow along on Instagram, and be sure to check your inbox in November for the next newsletter to hear how it goes and which activities our reluctant readers loved the most. Now, let's move on to the resources!

Reading

Fall picture books the whole family will love

I am so ready for fall! The weather has been lovely this week. I am soaking in the sights of falling leaves and flannel lol, join the fun with this new book list.

A few fantastic read aloud books for kids 5-8

Here you'll find The Mouse and the Motorcycle and 4 runners-up for our book club choice. These are great read aloud books for younger kids!

My favorite wordless picture books

There are so many wonderful, wordless picture books that I need to make a new list soon! For now, I hope you enjoy a few of my favorites, and respond to this email to send me a few of your own.

Writing

New month, new writing prompt

This is a growing list of prompts for you and your kids. Check back each month for new inspiration!

138 picture prompts to inspire student writing

I've given you written prompts, but the New York Times had the great idea of providing prompts through images! They have current and past images available to inspire kids to get writing.

To my fellow writers and educators, what other topics in writing do you want to know more about? I go back and forth between providing more resources for aspiring writers, or providing more for those teaching writing to children. Let me know your thoughts and preferences.

Literacy

UFLI Foundations Toolbox

Last month I talked a lot about Reading Universe and their amazing resources, this month is all about the Literacy Institute at the University of Florida. If you teach or tutor reading, this is a must have on your list of resources!

UFLI offers both print and digital lesson plans, printable activities, homework sheets, and decodable passages. This, and Reading Universe, are both essential in my own sessions. Over the next few months we'll also take a look at pre-reading and early literacy skills, and other resources available to us for teaching them to our kids.

5 strategies for getting reluctant readers reading

You've helped students crack the alphabetic code, you are supporting them in building their fluency, but it is HARD and they are resistant to reading. These tips are for you.

Florida center for reading research

Another catalog of free resources out of Florida! The Florida Center for Reading Research has compiled a list of resources and activities you can use when teaching reading, and we thank them for their hard work.

There are A LOT of paid resources out there, and some of them are incredibly helpful! But, I don't want you to feel like they are your only options. If you are a teacher, reading specialist, tutor, or parent and you are looking to increase your arsenal of activities and resources you can use with your kids, you have come to the right place. I am a literacy focused speech-language pathologist with a passion for getting reluctant readers reading.

Research is my love language, and I am here to find all the best books, articles, and activity plans for you so you can spend more time with your kids!
